Latin Club Wins Awards on Classical Association of Virginia Latin Tournament
Four students from Sterling Middle School and Park View High
School won Honorable Mention Summa Cum Laude awards on the
Alpha (public school) Division of the Seventy-Fourth Tournament
of the Classical Association of Virginia (CAV).
Senior Richard won his award on the Vergil exam, which is based on the College Board Advanced Placement syllabus of Vergil’s epic poem the Aeneid. Freshman Kevin and Senior Thanh-Thanh both won their awards on the Level II exam. Sterling Middle School student Jasmine won her award on the Latin I exam. Their awards on the state’s oldest and most prestigious competition place these students among the best Latin students in all public schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Furthermore, Richard, Kevin, and Than-Than are the only students from all of Loudoun County to place on the CAV Tournament exam. Jasmine is the only middle school student from all of Loudoun County to place on the exam. Designed to test a Latin student's mastery of the language, the exams consist of questions on vocabulary, forms, syntax, and (on upper level exams) rhetorical and poetic devices. The exams also require students to read passages for translation “on sight” to show active and accurate comprehension. Please join us in congratulating these students on proudly representing Park View High School, Sterling Middle School, and Loudoun County with their outstanding achievements. |
